What is high-speed access?
High speed access can be defined as any Internet connection faster than a normal analog dial-up connection. A normal dial-up connection can connect at up to approximately 53,300 bits per second, or in other terms 53.3 kilobits per second (kbs). A high-speed connection can start at 64 kbs and range up to approximately 45,000,000 bits per second or referred to 45 megabits per second (mbs).

How fast is high speed?
The speed depends on the type of high-speed connection you choose. An ISDN line can connect at 64 kbs, which sounds only slightly faster than a regular telephone dial-up connection, but this can be a bit misleading. An ISDN line is a digital line, and has less overhead when transferring data. This means more bandwidth is allocated to your data transfer (throughput) rather than maintaining the connection. This can cause the throughput to be almost twice as fast as a normal dial-up connection.
A dual channel ISDN connection is the same as a normal ISDN connection, but is connecting with both channels of the ISDN line. An ISDN line has two channels (basically 2 lines) and each has their own phone number. You can connect to our system using both of these lines, connecting at 64 kbs per line, at a total of 128 kbs. When calculating throughput, that is almost 4 times the speed of a traditional dial-up connection. The speed for wireless and T1's can range from 64 kbs up to 1.54 mbs (1.54 mbs is approximately 28 times the speed of a traditional dial-up connection), depending on the desired speed. A T3 can provide up to 45 mbs (45 mbs is approximately 28 times the speed of a T1 connection or 784 times the speed of a traditional dial-up connection).
